DOI : 10.4194/trjfas.2011.0109 © Viewed : 4636 - Downloaded : 5271 Monthly data of length composition for silver pomfret, Pampus argenteus, were recorded from the Northern Persian Gulf (Khuzestan province), between April 2004 to March 2005. ELEFAN in the software package FiSAT was used to analyse the length frequency data. The maximum measured fork length and weight were 312 mm and 1191 g respectively. The parameter values of the von Bertalanffy growth function were: L∞= 339 mm; k = 0.55 year-1 and t0= -0.16 year. The estimated value of the instantaneous rate of total mortality, z based on length converted catch curve was 2.07 year-1. The instantaneous rate of natural mortality, M based on the growth parameters and mean environmental temperature was 0.58 year-1. The annual instantaneous fishing mortality rate, F was estimated to be 1.49 year-1. The exploitation rate, E was 0.72 year-1 and the results from the yield-per-recruit analysis indicated that the resource was heavily over-exploited, and some measures of management should be rapidly implemented to protect the silver pomfret population in the Northern Persian Gulf.
